treatment for Eating Disorders

Although there seems to be understandig for conditions like anoerexia and bulimia, there still doesnt seem to be any effective treatment in spite of the fact that these conditions seem to be escallating and affecting younger and younger people - usually girls.
The treatment I had has been largely dietary advice (and we all know what a healthy diet is even if we dont stick to it) and diet plans and weighing. I attended a therapy group for ED's that dabbled in cognitive approaches, and some techniques like wait ten minutes before you binge (doesnt help!) but largely just talked about how we use food and what we should be eating. After this therapy ended, all of us without exception had exactly the same problems at the same level although there was a closeness and feelig of support amongst us which was good. I have an appointment at the ED clinic tomorrow, it will probably be what it normally is, just an ellaborated version of asking how I am
It just seems that in view of the scale of the problem, the best type of 'treatment' on offer seems to be supportive/advice rather that curative approaches

Kirsty,
I am in an ED program. The therapists approach is different that any I have ever experienced before. It is called intuitive eating. It is something we are all born with, but it taken away from us in early toddlerhood by our caregivers trying to teach us what they think is the proper way of eating. It is a really neat approach and I am learning a lot. Also we learn that there is no good or bad food. And to eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full. We learn how to read our hunger cues, even if we shut them off a long time ago.

I have the idea that the eating disorders is a type of OCD distraction... we get stuck and just choose not to eat....way longer then whats healthy. Atleast i get the impression thats part of it; don't really know; never been anorexic or anything, Just chose not to eat for 12 to 16 hours wiating for everyone to go to sleep so i could venture out and pilfer. lol
