Hi,

My 18yo son had a anxiety problem that lasted 4-5 days,
I took him to the hospital the night his heart felt like it was trying to escape from his chest,
this scared the hell outta him, the doctor said it was anxiety which can seem like a heat attack!

my question is: is anxiety genetic? I get it from time to time (his 41yo mother)

the doctor said it was common for people his age to suffer from anxiety.

any theory's will be appreciated.

thanks Liz

Liz,

I wouldn't say it's 'common' for an 18 year old but yes, it can happen to even younger children... I have an ex who had a nervous breakdown at age 8.....
I'm not a medical professional but would assume that like a lot of issues, anxiety could be hereditary.  I'm sure you can google it and find a lot of answers to your questions on the web...
Best wishes !

i dont think anxiety is just a inhareted thing. im not sure wether you are trying to play the its all my fault card that we parents play alot, but if that is what you are thinking it isnt your fault. my daughter was suacidal areound age 6 or so. she was really smart, just not emotionally reay for school. i still kind of blame my self. i knew she didnt belong there and she wasnt ready, but i wasnt going to deal with her father. right now she is 13 and has a lot of anxiety. i started taking her to the jym and spending alot of time with her. wether it helped or not... i dont no.

Like most medical conditions, there are both environmental and hereditary factors.

Kids put much pressure on themselves.

My stepdaughters are great examples.

yeah i agree there, that like with most people, doesnt matter about the age, that we can struggle with anxiety.  there is for example, stress anxiety, or there is performance anxiety, some anxiety is a trigger for us to try harder and some anxiety is as a result of not having confidence, of the outcome.  and some of us cant accept we can please or create a positive result.  as a parent we try to support those we care about, so if you explain that anxiety can happen at any age, to anyone, but that you are there to listen and support, this may go a long way to provide some reassurance.  life is difficult for this age group, i believe, as there is a lot of conflict, to experiment, to excel, to perform, to provide, to be part of, so a lot of triggers or pulls on the anxiety levels.  just try and see where you can offer support, or attend something together to show your support, and congratulate yourselves on being a help to each other.

is your son feeling any better at the moment Liz?

I’m sorry, but I don’t think that member is hear anymore. I’m not sure if you’re looking for someone to relate to or not, but I have anxiety and my 13 year old has had it from about age 5 if you were.
