I have never done this before so if the pole comes out wrong I have an excuse. Just wondering if members new or would like to learn other languages. It seems like a cool thing to do. It may help boost esteem etc.

I guess this really doesn’t belong here, but I now know what a pole looks like.

Ahem, back on topic, poles excluded. . .I don't know about the self-esteem angle, but speaking other languages comes in VERY handy if you are traveling in non-English-speaking countries!

Anybody who airily waves a hand and says, "Oh, don't worry - everybody over there [outside the UK] speaks English" - is FULL of baloney!  I found plenty of people who didn't, but because I had my handy-dandy dictionaries with me, I could go into a pharmacy in France and ask for throat lozenges, (which didn't work) and into another pharmacy in Venice and ask, in Italian, for cough medicine (which DID work.)  I also managed to ask for an English-language Metro map in VERY fractured Greek while in Athens, and it worked.

Learning other languages (at least for me) is fun, and it has been my experience that the people in other countries don't mind if you make mistakes.  They appreciate your effort to talk to them in their own language.
